RADIO DAYS Ltd

The making of a Radio Days DJ.

The making of a DJ is a story that starts with a young boy born in a small but proud and elegant town to Alice and Ralph. At the age of four, he discovered a magic machine that played music by itself, the Wurlitzer Jukebox. This was the beginning of his love for music, which would shape his future.

During the next two years, he listened to music on the machine, but he did not understand the words. His mom explained that the music was in English from a place far away called the United States. He would spend afternoons with his grandpa around his big new GRUNDIG radio with “blue eye tuning” AM band and several short waves. They would listen to music from Big Bands like Glen Miller, and grandpa would read special collections of Readers Digests Magazine with all sorts of stories from World War 2.

Years 7 to 10 were a time of change for the young boy. His mom divorced his dad and traveled to the USA to work. He and his little brother stayed with their grandparents, and a new house was being finished in part of the same property by grandpa himself. He studied in the best local school, made many friends, and was exposed to American pop music thanks to the older sister of his best friend, who bought American pop music records by the dozens. He discovered the likes of Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, The Beachboys, and many more. He found out he liked pop music in English. Unfortunately, when our hero was ten, his grandpa died.

At the age of 12, tragedy struck when his grandma was killed in a very confusing circumstance. Our boy, his brother and his mom moved to the big city at Barrio San Miguelito. However, his love for music never wavered, and at the age of 14, he discovered an LP album called “Meet the Beatles,” which changed his life forever.

The year 16 was his graduation year from high school. At that time, the option to hear top 40 American pop music was limited to one show, one hour long, presented by Tito. There was also a Beatles short broadcast every day in the afternoon. But on February 2, the universe turned upside down when a new AM radio station was on the air, with DJs like in American radios and 16 hours of nonstop music every day! His role model was Henry, the 1 pm Disc Jockey. There were Picks, oldies but goldies, The Underground with the experimental sound of Jimi Hendrix, and the like. He wanted to meet the station and the DJs.

At the age of 18, there was a competition among local rock bands, and one of the disc jockeys from 1100 AM was hosting. They met, and he started visiting the cabin, learning how to operate the controls, and started working on Sundays. But wait a minute! He was a well-prepared young man, liked to read a lot, novels, magazines, trivia, world news, he spoke English. He was not only a voice.

On year 19, DJ Henry moved to the USA to go to college, and our boy got his own daily two-hour show, closing the station from 8pm to 10 pm, the “VISIT YOUR GIRLFRIEND NIGHT SHOW.”

And so, a happy ever after new DJ was born, spreading happiness and joy through music every day. He was grateful for all the experiences that had led him to this moment and looked forward to sharing his love of music with the world.
